The Financial Animal

Natasha Archdale, the artist renowned for collages of female nudes created with clippings of the Financial Times has unveiled her new collection, The Financial Animal, at The Royal Exchange.

The collection of animal portraits follows her celebrated nude collection – which sold out within two hours of its first public exhibition – and her recent work in iconic portraiture, with subjects including Margaret Thatcher, Nelson Mandela and the disgraced financier Bernie Madoff. The Financial Animal is made up of thousands of cuttings of The Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times and focuses on the creatures that dominate our financial landscape. Bears and bulls represent the markets themselves while elephants, donkeys and other creatures represent various political and economic institutions. This is art at it’s craziest yet it is apparent that the skills needed to create this are unique and Natasha Archdale’s masterpieces are truly that.

One of my favourite pieces was ‘The Bull’. This was created using cuttings of The Financial Times and measure: 40″ x 60″. The Bull’ refers to Bull Markets, a term used to describe the upward market trend. Much like a bull that will swipe its horns up at an opponent, a bullish trend in the stock market occurs with increasing investor confidence and investing in anticipation of future price increases.

I really enjoyed this collection and can’t wait to see what Natasha’s next works will be.
